A tea – light holder with the effects of Lithophany Lithophany: from the Greek words “lithos”, meaning stone, and “phanos”, meaning transparent. Here it refers to a thin, unglazed porcelain imprinted with a relief. A fascinating contrast is created by the combination of particularly transparent porcelain and light. The translucent motifs imprinted all the way around the holder become visible when the tea – light is lit. Every part of the image appears to be in a state of gentle motion thanks to the effects created by the flickering shadows and the variation in the amount of light passing through the porcelain, thus making it a unique accessory for every home.

Four Generations of Light

An enthusiasm for technology, a fascination with electricity, and a profound interest in lighting prompted Carl Steng to found a specialist lighting company in 1911 – at a time when homes and streets were still illuminated by gas. His son, Hans, successfully guided the business through the difficult post-war period and through the era of the German economic miracle.
In 1972, the reins passed to the third generation of the family, to Peter Steng, grandson of the founder. Following in the innovative footsteps of his forefathers, he was an early advocate of low-voltage lighting. The development of pioneering systems that combined high-quality engineering with attractive design led to many national and international awards. Andreas Steng, representing the fourth generation of the family, joined the senior management team in 1997, and acquired ownership in 2004.
The STENG success story demonstrates that tradition and progress are not mutually exclusive. All STENG lights are manufactured to the highest quality standards in Germany.

Thanks to a new kind of fabric shade with integrated reflector, light only shines in one desired direction, and where required, in two colors: white in the direction of the reflector, and red towards the rear. This casts a pleasant luminance throughout the room, without glare. The clever way the cable is threaded means the pendant light can be quickly and easily adjusted to any height.
RE-LIGHT is available as a ceiling, wall or free-standing light. The metal parts are chrome-plated. Shades are available in two versions: white/white or white/red.
Additional color filters available
in three colors.

2000mm/79” coaxial cable.
Custom lengths up to
3000mm/118” are possible.
For use with bi-pin lamps.

Hollow Tree
Handbuilt porcelain pieces are inspired by natural forces, and are made using a technique she has developed herself.
This particular piece is inspired by time spent drawing trees, which Liz has been doing since childhood. She is fascinated by their shapes, especially the older gnarled ones; "I love the way that even when dead they are still beautiful. I love to observe the details and patterns in the bark".

Torrent
Handbuilt porcelain pieces are inspired by natural forces, and are made using a technique she has developed herself.
This particular piece is inspired by the force and weight of water falling down, particularly in a flood situation, where the water takes everything in its path - unstoppable. The colours reflect those of flood waters.

Introduction: Thrown tablewares
The thrown tablewares are designed to wobble and dance, beckoning to be picked up, handled and used. Evidence of my desire for the work to be about the celebration of eating. The brushwork is both strong and subtle and enhances the three dimensions. Using tin glaze and oxides I create a finish that is sometimes watery and evocative of sea and sky, other times jagged like calligraphy.
I have a palette of over 40 different colours to choose from and am happy to work to commission.

The Reversible Dinner Plate
These plates can be used on either side, depending on whether you are serving a dry or saucy dish. One side of the dish has a blue brush stroke on it , bringing the plates together as a group. The other side has a different coloured brush stroke, for variety.

Cream Jug
Small, squat and cute these jugs are ideal for pouring cream on your pudding or in your coffee. A blue brush stroke on the inside, reminiscent of liquid, with a colour of your choice on the outside.

Milk Jug
Slightly taller than the cream jug, this jug can hold enough milk for several cups of tea or a bowl of cereal in the morning. A blue brush stroke on the inside, reminiscent of liquid, with a colour of your choice on the outside.

ruit / Serving Bowl
These bowls are a generous size for serving puddings or main courses, using as a mixing bowl or for salads and fruit. The outside of the bowl is decorated with a deep blue brush stroke and the inside with a combination of different colours.

Reversible plates
From the biggest to the smallest, these plates are all reversible. Decorated with bold brush strokes, using a variety of different colours.

Do you find it difficult to envision how a certain light will transform one of the rooms in your home?

You can become "enlightened" by visiting, Philips Lighting's Designing with Light site. It answers many of homeowners frequent questions about how to light their homes.

Begin with an introductory video featuring the insights of Stephen Saint-Onge, who recommends layering ambient, focal and decorative light to create the mood you want.

"Lighting is an incredibly powerful way to change your mood. You can make a room more romantic, more dramatic, more relaxing and even more energizing," he explains.

Saint-Onge defines each of the three elements of light as follows:

-Ambient light is the general lighting throughout the room.

-Focal light creates a visual focus, drawing the eye to important areas like wall art and workspaces.

-Decorative light includes chandeliers, wall sconces and display lights that complete a room.

Use the Designing with Light interactive experience to see how to brighten the following living spaces:

-Kitchen
-Dining Room
-Bathroom
-Living Room/Family Room
-Bedroom
-Office/Den

You can turn lights off and on to see what happens when ambient, decorative and focal lights are glowing in any combination, or shining brightly in unison.

Home Office Lighting Requires Special Attention
An article by By Eric Strandberg, L.C.
As more of us work as independent consultants or telecommute, home offices are being used more and more.

Many homes have an "office" in a room or part of a room where for an hour or two, a few times a month, bills are paid, letters are written or recipes are filed. This is not the type of office I am addressing.

If you regularly spend six or more hours at a time at your home office, then proper lighting can increase productivity, accuracy, and minimize fatigue and eye strain. Office tasks (whether computer-based, paper-based or a combination) require different lighting than most other areas of the home.

Light Your Home Office to Reduce Eyestrain

Don't watch TV in the dark! How many times have you heard that? Don't look at computer screens in the dark either!

The truth in the statement lies in understanding contrast ratios. The eye can adapt to a very wide range of light levels, but it can only adapt to one light level at one time. When one looks at a bright computer monitor on a dark background the eye doesn't know whether to adapt to the bright monitor or the dark background. When this happens hour after hour, day after day, fatigue sets in.

The same thing can happen when looking at a brightly lit sheet of white paper in a dark room.
To lessen eyestrain:

-Lower the brightness on the monitor
-Increase the light in the surrounding area; or
-Do both.

Just the opposite problem can occur when one places a computer monitor in front of a window.

The bright daylight surrounding the screen makes it difficult to see what is on the screen.

Watch for Reflections on Shiny Surfaces

Another area of concern is reflections on shiny surfaces, like computer screens and slick printed material. These reflections obscure the task making it difficult to read.

Windows are often the most noticeable cause of reflections but other light sources can be a problem, too. As you may recall from basic physics, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflectance-so if light strikes the task (or monitor) at the wrong angle, it will bounce into your eyes. Moving the offending light, changing your orientation to the light, or both can mitigate this problem. This relationship is called Eye-Task-Source Geometry.

Ideally the light should come from the side, for example; light coming from the right (whether ceiling, wall or desk mounted) will reflect off to the left. Light coming from the front will tend to reflect up into your eyes. Computer monitors also reflect light sources that are located behind you (over your shoulder).

Layer Light for Best Design

All good lighting design uses layers of light, for the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing design strategy. The three basic layers are:

-Task (putting high light levels only where we need it); -Ambient (for circulation and to control contrast);
-Accent lighting points of interest (optional but important for providing visual interest).

Consider Fluorescent for Task, Ambient and Halogen for Accent

Using fluorescent is an excellent choice of light source for both task and ambient light. I recommend 4-foot T-8 lamps with electronic ballasts in high activity areas like a home office.

A good color choice would be 3500K. (See article, "I Hate Fluorescent!) The long life, great color qualities, and high efficiency make it the logical choice.

Also, the large size of fluorescent provides a large radiant surface that helps to minimize shadows.

For ambient light you can use ceiling surface mounted fixtures, indirect pendants or wall mounted light shelves.
For task light you can use fluorescent down lights (either recessed or surface mount) over the task areas or under cabinet (or shelf) lighting. Be sure not to locate a task light directly in front of the work area (like an under-cabinet light), as reflections can bounce directly in you eyes.

For accent light, a spotlight or two (either recessed or surface) that uses halogen lamps can be a nice touch.

-Task (putting high light levels only where we need it); -Ambient (for circulation and to control contrast);
